Tangerine for iTunes
I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. Back when I was DJ-ing in college, we used to categorize songs into up (fast), medium, and down (slow). We did that because we thought back-to-back slow songs was going to turn users off. So we had this basic pattern (UMDUM) between commercials.
When I shuffle iTunes music by genre, for example, there’s no analysis of the upness or downness of songs. Wouldn’t it be cool if I could pick songs by tempo or heaviness of beat?
Enter Tangerine from Potion Factory. It quickly analyzes your iTunes library and notes beats per minute and beat intensity. You can then pick songs and export those playlists back to iTunes. Slick!
It’s a beta now, so it’s free to download. Send in a bug report or blog about it and they’ll send you a license when it is released. Very nice. AND, they have the coolest icon EVER!

Hi Michael, hope all is going well for you in the new job. You should post an update.
It’s been a while since you’ve posted this, and I wonder if you’re still happy with Tangerine? I’d love to have this metadata populated for my tracks, but I’ve got a lot of songs (like 22k), mostly in lossless, and I’m pretty far behind in backups.
Do you think it’s safe to run it against everything? Also, what’s your process for adding this metadata to new stuff? Just run it again?
Finally, do you find you’re able to create playlists using just iTunes once this metadata is present, or are you still creating playlists using Tangerine?

Enjoying the job, thanks Daniel. I really like working for Apple - it really embraces my customer-first attitude.
On Tangerine, I am still enjoying it. I haven’t had it modify my tunes directly, rather I play stuff within their interface. However, I’d never operate on songs unless I had them backed up. I have an external drive I use for this purpose. Storage is cheap! Back up, my friend!
