Flickr vs. SmugMug

with 10 comments

Okay, so apparently, I just got off the bus. I came across a reference to smugmug.com today. Some web searching seems to suggest that they’re less of a community than Flickr, but that they offer more upload bandwidth and the same unlimited storage for about 3/4 the price.

That makes it a tough call for me — I’ve never had anyone discover my photos on Flickr, and certainly never had anyone tag my photos. As an offsite storage facility and web-hosting location for my pictures, either would probably do, but I *am* having to reduce the size of the pictures I’m uploading to stay under 1GB/month with Flickr, and I wouldn’t have to do that with smugmug.

Advise me. oh lazyweb!

Or have I mucked up my rss feeds so much that nobody is listening any more?

  1. We’re still listening! I think Flickr has a better UI, which is worth the extra price. And there are the network effects of being on the same service as most of your friends/colleagues. Not to mention that Flickr is “cool” these days.

  2. Let me know what you decide. I need to figure something out. I’m not that concerned about the social network aspect, I just want to be able to print to Shutterfly.

  3. I think that smugmug is for people who are serious about photography. (By the way, upload capacity is unlimited in smugmug, it is is download capacity that is capped).

But flickr is great for its community and sharing cameraphone shots, etc.

I have an account on both, and am moving everything to smugmug from flickr.

  4. I too have both. Since Yahoo just bought Flickr the price has dropped dramatically. Currently my photos are synchronized on both. Smugmug seems more professional to me, while Flickr seems more of a hip/cool site. I like Smugmug’s organization while Flickr seems to have a better community. I also like the ability to send a photo and description directly to a blog in Flickr.

  5. Forgot to mention that I found a site that compares to two.

  6. Outstanding! I’ll be giving smugmug a real trial and writing more about it soon! It might even eventually replace our gallery installation!

  7. I’ve since done my own review here: Smugmug vs. Flickr

If you haven’t signed up already there is a link that you can use to save $5 (and I save $10) on the annual subscription price.

  10. I agree, the two sites are very different and like Doug Tygar said one is more professional oriented than the other one.The only problem is that with some of these sites you can’t get your pictures back after your subscription expires!!! That is why now I want to make sure that if I decide to stop my subscription I could get all my photo in their original sizes.
